Energy Overview

Energy on Long Island

Long Island is facing an energy crisis with the increasing demand for energy. There are many power plants on Long Island, most of which use natural gas to create energy. With the price of heating hovering around $3.30 for oil and the threat of global warming, there is a push towards cheaper and more efficient energy sources.

Long Island has also been the site of the Shoreham nuclear power plant. This plant never produced a single watt of commercial power because of large protests against the plant.Long Island has an abundance of renewable energy sources at its disposal. LIPA, Long Island’s biggest power distributor, has been working on trying to build an offshore wind farm. With wind power being one of Long Island’s most abundant sources of energies, it is the first step in moving towards renewable energies.

Many home owners are also choosing to use incentives given by the federal and state government to install solar panel on the roof of their houses. LIPA is also deciding weather it will upgrade its power plants in Port Jefferson. This could have a dire affect on the Port Jefferson economy and energy prices for all of Long Island.
