Fire Districts Overview

Fire Districts on Long Island

Most Long Island fire departments are dependent on volunteers. They do not have a paid staff that will be available to respond at all times. Though volunteer fire departments have worked in the past, they are failing us in the present. Many fire departments are not getting the same number of volunteers they did in the past. Increased training requirements and more people working further from home have reduced volunteers. Also, because of the population increase there is a greater demand for more volunteers today.

The lack of volunteers also has reduced the response time of these departments. Some believe these fire districts should follow the Long Beach fire department and have a hybrid system where they have a paid staff as well as volunteers who donate their time to help keep others safe. This will guarantee that someone is always available to respond and they will also be at the fire house should the fire alarm go off.
