Health Care Overview

Health Care on Long Island

Long Island has many problems when it comes to health care. About 16% of Long Islanders were uninsured in 2002, according to a report done by The Long Island Coalition for a National Health Plan. There is a growing rate of uninsured on Long Island due to the high cost of living on Long Island. Many people cannot afford health insurance, but make too much to get it from the government.

There are some positives to living on Long Island when it comes to health care though. One of the main is the number of hospitals on Long Island many of which are considered the best in the country. Stony Brook Hospital is among the leaders in research in the country and Long Island has some of the best cardiology departments in the country. Long Island has an excellent health care system, but more and more residents find it unaffordable.
