Housing Overview

Housing on Long Island

Long Island housing market has taken a big hit from the economy downturn and the burst of the housing bubble. While housing prices on Long Island fell sharply after the housing bubble burst, they are still too high for many people to buy new houses here. Long Island is among the 10 least affordable places to lice in the United States. Many home owners who bought house with an adjustable mortgage rate are now facing foreclosures.

The increases in school taxes have forced many seniors out of their houses and out of Long Island. These taxes are also keeping middle class families from being able to buy houses on Long Island. Nassau County has reported an increase in their homeless rate and families who earn $50,000 a year are now homeless. As contractors stop building and homeowners stop renovating Long Island loses more and more construction jobs.
