Immigration on Long Island
Long Island is one of the most diverse areas of the country. Because of this there are a large number of illegal immigrants on Long Island. According to Newsday the Hispanic population in Patchogue has gone from 4% to 25% in the last five year. Immigration throughout Long Island has increased in recent years.
According to a report done by the Long Island Wins, the immigration population on Long Island has doubled since 1980 to 465,000 people. This accounts for 16% of Long Island’s general population. According to the report, Long Island immigrants had a $10.6 billion impact on the economy. Immigrants on Long Island paid $2.13 billion in taxes and cost local governments $1.06 billion in education, health care, and corrections. This gives a net benefit of about $1.07 billion dollars or $2,305 per immigrant.
