Police Commissioner Richard Dormer today announced a comprehensive 10-point plan to address concerns about recent crime in Brentwood.

The initiative, which includes the participation of many of the department’s specialty units, as well as beefed up patrol, was launched last night. The plan will remain in place for as long as is deemed necessary to assure residents of the safety of their community.

“We will do everything we can to ensure the continued safety of Brentwood residents,” said Dormer.

The plan involves the following elements:

1. Transfer of four officers and a sergeant from the Police Academy to the Third Precinct and the creation of a special, five-officer tactical unit to concentrate on neighborhood crime hot spots.
2. Gun and Gang Units will patrol in the Brentwood community on the day and evening tours. Tours of duty will be added/extended, as necessary.
3. An additional patrol car will be assigned to Brentwood between 11 p.m. and 4 a.m. every night.
4. Precinct narcotics detectives will be assigned to Brentwood to crack down on drug activity in the community.
5. Members of the Emergency Service Section and Canine Section will patrol Brentwood to add a commanding presence and to supplement patrol officers.
6. DWI Enforcement Team officers will patrol Brentwood in order to keep the community’s roads safe.
7. Electronic street surveillance will be increased.
8. Neighborhood Watch groups will be created through the assistance of Community Outreach officers. These groups will provide an additional eye on potential crime in the community.
9. The Narcotics Bureau’s Heroin Opiate Task Force will be assigned to Brentwood, to further concentrate on reducing drug activity in the community.
10. A mobile police van staffed by an officer will be stationed in various locations to provide information about police programs and provide an additional police presence.
