Public Education Overview

Public Education on Long Island

Long Island has many of the best public schools in New York State. They also have some of the highest paid teachers in New York State. There are also some failing school districts on Long Island. The control of Roosevelt School District was taken over by the state when the school district went bankrupt and half the students were failing. Now the school is back in control of the school board. The state is thinking of doing the same thing with the Wyandanch School district. In order to reduce spending many schools are also thinking of increasing class size and reducing the number of teachers. School districts receive most of their funding form property taxes. They are the recipients of about 70% of all property taxes.

Charter schools are also the topic of many controversies on Long Island as well as New York State. Many feel that creating competition between schools helps increase the level of education provided by both school. Others argue that charter schools take important resources away from school which they need to perform at the highest level. Charter schools are created in areas that have an education system that is failing them. They receive funding from the state which is taken away from the original schools. Students and their parents have the choice of either going to a charter school or the original school. The funding for that student would follow him or her to where ever they decide to go.

There are also many Colleges and Universities on Long Island. These higher education institutions bring a large boost to the economy of their area. Stony Brook University is the largest employer in Suffolk County.
