Legislator Gregory demands that Levy Put Public Safety Before Politics

Statement from Suffolk County Legislator DuWayne Gregory on Wednesday, March 17, 2010:

“Early yesterday morning there was yet another shooting in Suffolk County.  This time the shooting was in Wyandanch, the third shooting in less than three weeks in the Wyandanch community.  There have been over 8 shootings since the beginning of the year in the 15th Legislative District.  That number is of course excluding the shootings that have occurred in Brentwood, Central Islip and other communities throughout Suffolk County.  To my knowledge, the County Executive has not held a public forum to reassure the communities where the recent increase in crime has been occurring.  He has not faced the public and answered their heartfelt questions and pleas for help.  To date, he has only sent representatives which are fine to a point, but we are now beyond that point.  These representatives were not elected by the voters!  The voters deserve to hear from and be reassured by their County Executive that his focus is on reducing crime in the affected communities.  They also deserve to know that the County Executive’s full attention is being given to this crucial matter.  This is not a time for politics.  Therefore, I am asking County Executive Steve Levy to suspend his exploratory committee for New York State Governor, and focus on the immediate needs in his home county of Suffolk.  The community deserves no less.”
