Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy Announces Start of Reconstruction Project of Patchogue’s East Main Street

Montauk Highway to Receive Traffic and Safety Improvements from NYS Route 112 to County Road 101

Seeking to improve the infrastructure, enhance safety and stimulate the local economy of southern Brookhaven, Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy heralded the legislative approval Tuesday of a project that will allocate funds to begin a major reconstruction of Montauk Highway in Patchogue.

The $9.5 million project to reconstruct Montauk Highway (County Road 80) in Patchogue will consist of resurfacing and widening key intersections between NYS Route 112 and Sills Road (CR 101). Additional project goals along that one-mile stretch of road include upgrading existing pavement and drainage systems, increasing safety through the addition of turn lanes, implementing off street parking, providing for the modification of traffic control devices and installation of appropriate safety appurtenances, and improving the visual aesthetics of the roadway.

Levy said the contractor to perform the road reconstruction had been selected, and would be beginning the work soon. Similarly, a resolution submitted to the Suffolk County Legislature by Levy seeks to allocate $150,000 for construction inspection of the worksite was approved Tuesday.

Also known as East Main Street, this stretch of Montauk Highway has been the site of several initiatives under Levy’s administration to make this part of Patchogue thrive.

Last September, the county funded a $90,000 project under Levy’s direction to complete planning and mapping used to investigate the feasibility of installing sewers within the reconstructed corridor. The advent of sewers for this stretch of Main Street will allow Patchogue to continue to expand its business district and improve its local economy.

“We are very proud of what we have been able to achieve in Patchogue in the last few years with the help of village officials like Mayor Paul Pontieri,” Levy said. “Reconstructing this portion of Montauk Highway will allow vehicles and pedestrians to travel this section of Main Street much easier.”
